Faith-Based Coaching: Why Faith Changes Everything

Jannette McCormick, faith-based purpose coach in Tulsa — The Case for Faith-Based Coaching

Sometimes the path to purpose begins with one brave decision: to stop hiding who God created you to be.

Have you ever felt like you had to hide parts of your authentic self depending on where you were or who you were with? I have. There were seasons when I did not feel free to bring my whole self to work. I wondered if sharing my faith too openly would make me seem weak or less capable. And, if I am honest, there were also parts of my dreams I hesitated to share with friends in my faith community. Wanting both a meaningful career and a loving family sometimes felt hard to explain.

So, let me ask you: do you feel fully authentic in all of your relationships? If you have ever felt the pressure to fit in by leaving parts of yourself behind, you know how exhausting it can be. Your values, hopes, gifts, and calling are still present, even when you try to tuck them away. But living divided—one version of yourself at work and another with friends or family—can slowly drain your peace and joy. I do not believe that is the way God intended us to live out our purpose.

The scripture James 1:8 reminds us that a double-minded person is unstable in all they do. David prays in Psalm 86:11, “Teach me your way, Lord, that I may rely on your faithfulness; give me an undivided heart, that I may fear your name.” That prayer is such a beautiful invitation. Jesus shows us the way toward wholeness by calling us to seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness. As we study and apply the truth of God’s Word, He begins to heal the places where our hearts and minds have felt divided. Little by little, we become more confident showing up as the person He created us to be.

This is exactly the work faith-based coaching is built for. Doubt, fear, and uncertainty may try to stand in the way, but they do not have to define your next step. God has already placed gifts, wisdom, and purpose inside of you. A faith-based coach can come alongside you, ask meaningful questions, and help you move toward clarity, healing, and courageous action.

What Makes Faith-Based Coaching Different?

Before we answer that, it helps to understand what coaching is. As a certified coach, I follow the International Coaching Federation’s definition of coaching: partnering with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximize their personal and professional potential. Simply put, coaching helps you become the best version of yourself.

That includes every part of your life: work, family, friendships, calling, and faith. You are not a collection of separate roles. You are one person, fearfully and wonderfully made, and your faith is not something to set aside while you pursue growth. It is part of the foundation that shapes your decisions, your values, and your vision for the future.

How Does Coaching Help You Find Purpose?

Coaching often begins with something simple but powerful: thoughtful questions and intentional listening. There is no one-size-fits-all formula for discovering purpose. A good coach helps you slow down, reflect honestly, and uncover the next right step for your specific season.

And here is the encouraging truth: God created you for more.

This is the heart of faith-based coaching vs secular coaching. A secular coach may focus on industry standards, professional achievement, and personal goals—and those can be valuable. A faith-based coach also considers those things, but through the lens of God’s Word, your God-given gifts, and the passions He has placed within you. Your life does not have to be divided between what your faith says matters and what the world says matters. In faith-based coaching, we bring those pieces together and seek first the kingdom of God as we pursue growth, excellence, and obedience.

Why Does Faith Matter in Coaching?

Scripture teaches us that faith is the foundation we are called to build our lives upon. In Luke 6:47-49, Jesus describes the person who hears His words and puts them into practice:

“They are like a man building a house, who dug down deep and laid a foundation on rock. When the flood came, the torrent struck that house but could not shake it, because it was well built.”

One of my clients took this truth to heart. She sensed God leading her away from the corporate world and toward a life marked by peace, joy, and purpose. Together, we explored her ideas, dreams, and talents. She answered tough questions and began to recognize how worldly success had become more important than God’s purpose for her life.

Her journey was not instant or easy. Rebuilding a foundation takes courage. But as she invested in herself and began using the gifts God had given her, she discovered deeper peace, joy, and fulfillment. That is a beautiful picture of success—not simply achieving more but becoming more aligned with the purpose God has prepared for you.

Not everyone is called to make a dramatic career change. Maybe, for you, the next step is saying yes to a leadership role, pursuing a dream that keeps resurfacing, or developing the confidence and skills needed for the season ahead. Coaching can help you name what you need, identify what is holding you back, and move forward with faith and intention.

If you are ready to stop hiding and begin showing up as your whole, God-created self, there is hope. You do not have to figure out the path alone. The answers God has placed within you can be uncovered, strengthened, and put into action one faithful step at a time.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a faith-based purpose coach?

A faith-based purpose coach partners with you to discover and pursue the calling God has placed on your life. Unlike secular coaching, the process is rooted in Scripture and prayer alongside practical goal-setting, so your growth aligns with your faith instead of competing with it. The goal is a whole, undivided life — one where your work, relationships, and purpose all reflect who God created you to be.

How is faith-based coaching different from secular coaching?

Both help you set goals and move toward your potential, but a faith-based coach filters that work through God’s Word, your God-given gifts, and the purpose He’s placed in you. A secular coach may focus on industry standards and achievement alone; a faith-based coach brings those together with your faith rather than leaving it at the door. For many Christians, that’s the difference between chasing success and walking in calling.

How is faith-based coaching different from therapy or counseling?

Therapy and counseling are clinical practices that often focus on healing the past and treating mental-health conditions. Coaching is forward-looking — it helps you clarify where God is leading you and take intentional steps to get there. Faith-based coaching adds Scripture and prayer to that forward motion, and it can complement, not replace, the care of a licensed counselor.

Does life coaching actually work?

Yes — coaching works by helping you slow down, ask honest questions, and take consistent, intentional steps toward a clear goal. Faith-based coaching adds a lasting foundation: instead of relying on willpower alone, it anchors your growth in trust in God and the renewing of your mind (Romans 12:2). That’s what helps the change hold long after a session ends.

What are the benefits of a Christian life coach?

A Christian life coach helps you align your career, relationships, and daily decisions with your faith, so you’re no longer living one version of yourself at work and another at home. The benefits include greater clarity on your God-given purpose, the confidence to take courageous next steps, and a deeper peace that comes from building your life on a foundation that holds.

What happens in a faith-based coaching session?

A session begins with thoughtful questions and intentional listening. Together you’ll explore where you are, what’s holding you back, and the next right step for your season — viewed through the lens of God’s Word and your unique gifts. You leave with clarity and a faith-filled action step, not a one-size-fits-all formula.
